Tibet, a region with a rich and fascinating history, has remained isolated from the rest of the world for centuries. Situated in the Asian plateau, at an altitude of about 4000 meters above sea level, it is home to one of the oldest civilizations in history. The history of Tibet dates back to ancient times, when the Tibetan Empire was founded in the XNUMXth century, which became a powerful cultural, political and military center.
In the Middle Ages, Tibet also became a center of Buddhism, which developed under the influence of missionaries from India. Tibetan Buddhism became an integral part of Tibetan social and cultural life, and Buddhist monasteries became not only places of prayer but also centers of education, art, and philosophy.
Over the centuries, Tibet has undergone various periods of rule, both internal and external, with many attempts to maintain its independence. In the 1950th century, Tibet came into international attention following the Chinese invasion in XNUMX, which had a profound effect on its political and cultural landscape.
To travel to Tibet, you need to have some formal documents, as the region is located within the People's Republic of China. In addition to the standard Chinese tourist visa, you need a special permit to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).
A Chinese visa only allows entry to the territory of China, while a Tibetan permit is required to visit Tibet itself, including its capital, Lhasa, and other places of particular importance, such as Mount Everest Base Camp and Namtso Lake.
A permit to enter Tibet is a document that must be issued by the Chinese authorities. The process of obtaining it is usually time-consuming and requires appropriate formalities, so it is recommended to apply for it well in advance. This permit is tied to a specific travel route, which means that you must provide planned places of stay and transport.
Unlike many other regions of China, individual travel is not allowed in Tibet, meaning you cannot travel around the region on your own.
Travel by plane
The most convenient and comfortable way to get to Tibet is by plane. The main airport of the Tibet Autonomous Region is Lhasa Gonggar Airport, which is located about 60 kilometers southwest of Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Lhasa Gonggar is an international airport, serving regular domestic flights from major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Chengdu, Xi'an, and Kunming.
Flights to Lhasa offer spectacular views during approach to landing as planes fly over Himalayan peaks and picturesque valleys. It is worth remembering that Lhasa Gonggar is located at an altitude of around 3 meters above sea level, which may require some adaptation to altitude conditions. Once in Lhasa, travelers can continue exploring the region using local carriers or guided tours.
Travel by train
For those looking for a more scenic and adventurous journey, the Tibetan Railway is a great option. It is one of the most unique and extraordinary ways to reach Tibet. The Tibetan Railway, which connects Qinghai with Lhasa, is the highest railway in the world, reaching an altitude of 5 meters above sea level at its highest point, passing through the Tibetan Plateau.
The route is known for its incredible landscape and technological feats, as trains have to overcome extremely difficult geographical conditions, including rivers, mountains and deserts. The Tibet Railway is also an extremely comfortable way to travel, and thanks to modern trains equipped with air oxygenation systems, you can safely and comfortably overcome great heights. Trains run regularly from cities such as Xining (capital of Qinghai province) and Lanzhou to Lhasa, with a travel time of around 48 hours.
Lhasa is located at an altitude of 3 m above sea level, which means a risk of altitude sickness. It is worth accustoming the body gradually and avoiding intense exertion for the first few days. It is advisable to take medication for altitude (e.g. acetazolamide).
The period from April to October is considered the best time to travel to Tibet., due to milder temperatures and more stable weather conditions.
During this time, the average temperatures in the region are more pleasant and the days are long, allowing you to take full advantage of the daylight hours to explore and take in the amazing landscapes. Although there is some rainfall during this period, it is usually relatively mild and the trails are accessible and safe to traverse. This is the perfect time to trek the Himalayan trails, visit Buddhist monasteries and experience the culture and history of Tibet in all its glory.
Winter (from December to February), on the other hand, is a period of significant cooling, when temperatures can drop below zero.
This is when Tibet is much less crowded and allows for a more intimate experience of its unique atmosphere. Additionally, during this period, the snow-covered landscapes become incredibly picturesque, and the majesty of the Himalayas in the winter scenery makes an indelible impression. However, it is worth remembering that at this time, the availability of some attractions may be limited due to weather conditions, and some trails may be more difficult to traverse. Winter in Tibet is therefore a time for those who seek peace, quiet and a unique atmosphere, and at the same time are ready for more difficult travel conditions.
Tibet offers travelers countless places to explore that are not only visually appealing but also have great historical, religious and cultural significance:
The Potala Palace in Lhasa is one of the most recognizable sites in Tibet, a symbol of spiritual and political power in the region. The former residence of the Dalai Lama, built at an altitude of 3 meters above sea level, is an architectural masterpiece. The palace, with its magnificent halls, temples, chambers and numerous chapels, was not only the home of Tibet's supreme spiritual leader, but also a place of political events. From its terrace, there is a magnificent view of the city of Lhasa and the surrounding mountains. The Potala is also a place that reflects the complex history of Tibet and the deep-rooted religiosity of the Tibetan people.
Located in the heart of Lhasa, it is the spiritual center of Tibet. Considered the holiest site in Tibetan Buddhism, it attracts pilgrims from all over the region. Built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo, the temple is a symbol of the introduction of Buddhism to Tibet. Its interior is filled with precious relics, including Buddha images, relics, and sacred texts. Pilgrims who come to Jokhang perform the traditional “kora” – a prayer circle around the temple, as part of a profound spiritual practice.
The monasteries near Lhasa are among the largest and most important centres of Tibetan Buddhism. Drepung Monastery, founded in the 10th century, was for centuries the largest monastery in the world, housing up to 000 monks. Its impressive buildings, courtyards and chapels are a testament to the deep spirituality and distinguished tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Sera Monastery, known for its tradition of intense philosophical discussion among monks, offers a glimpse into the intellectual life of Tibet.
For adventure lovers and unique experiences, a visit to Everest Base Camp is a great choice. Although the expedition itself to the summit of Mount Everest is extremely demanding, reaching the base camp, which is located 5 meters above sea level, offers unparalleled views of the world's highest mountain.
From Base Camp you can admire the Everest massif in all its glory, and feel the power of this legendary mountain. It is also a great opportunity to learn about the culture and life of the local Sherpa communities, who have been carriers in these mountainous regions for generations.
Lake Yamdrok is one of the most sacred lakes in Tibet, which is located at an altitude of about 4 meters above sea level. Considered one of the three sacred lakes of Tibet, along with Lake Namtso and Lake Manasarovar, Lake Yamdrok is also known for its extraordinary beauty. Its turquoise waters, surrounded by mountains, create a spectacular view that takes your breath away. In Buddhist tradition, it is considered a place that has healing and purifying powers. There are also Buddhist monasteries and temples around the lake, which add spiritual depth to the place.
