Kenya – Sightseeing Tours and a Trip to the Samburu Game Reserve

Samburu National Reserve Samburu National Reserve) is one of the most fascinating safari destinations in northern Kenya. Located north of Mount Kenya, in the Ewaso Nyiro River Valley, the reserve captivates with its rugged landscape and the unique character of a semi-arid savanna. It's a land of contrasts – rocky hills, dry riverbeds, umbrella acacias, and narrow ribbons of green along the river, which gives life to all the inhabitants of this part of Africa.

Our trips to the Samburu reserve It's not just a classic safari, but a real expedition into the wilds of Kenya - a place less frequented by tourists, preserving an authentic atmosphere and incredible natural diversity.

The unique geography and nature of Samburu

The Samburu Reserve covers an area of approximately 165 km² and lies at an altitude of approximately 800–1200 meters above sea level. This area has a hot, dry climate, which has shaped a unique semi-arid savanna ecosystem. The Ewaso Nyiro River flows through the reserve, providing a key source of water for wildlife, especially during the dry season. It is along its banks that life is concentrated – here you can observe herds of African elephants, reticulated giraffes, African buffalo, and the rare beisa oryx.

Samburu is famous for the so-called "Samburu Special Five"—five species found nowhere else in Kenya: the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, and beisa oryx. Observing these unique animals in their natural habitat is a real treat for nature lovers and wildlife photographers. The reserve also hosts lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, Nile crocodiles, and numerous bird species—over 450 recorded species, including the picturesque hornbills, kingfishers, and weavers.

The Samburu Tribe – Keepers of the Traditions of Northern Kenya

During a trip to the Samburu National Reserve, you'll have the opportunity to meet the local Samburu tribe – closely related to the Maasai, but maintaining their own rich culture and traditions. The Samburu people, a Nilo-Hamitic group, are known for their colorful costumes, beadwork, and strong commitment to their pastoral customs.

A visit to a Samburu village offers a unique opportunity to experience their daily lives—from cattle herding and traditional dances to conversations about the coexistence of humans and wildlife. It's an experience that allows for a deeper understanding of the culture and way of life of the people of northern Kenya.

Samburu Safari – a unique trip off the beaten track

A safari in the Samburu Game Reserve is a true adventure for those seeking an authentic African experience. Unlike popular parks like the Masai Mara or Amboseli, Samburu is a more peaceful, wilder, and more natural place.

Safari routes follow the Ewaso Nyiro River, through arid valleys and rocky hills, offering spectacular views of Kenya's northern deserts. It's a perfect place for wildlife viewing, landscape photography, and the contemplation of African nature in its pristine form.

Meru National Park – useful information on how to plan your trip

Meru National Park in Kenya is one of Kenya's lesser-known but exceptionally beautiful safari destinations. Located east of Mount Kenya, the park boasts a diverse range of landscapes—from open savannahs and forested hills to numerous rivers that crisscross the landscape and attract wildlife. This place has a unique atmosphere—more wild and authentic than popular parks like the Masai Mara or Amboseli, allowing you to truly experience Africa's natural beauty without the throngs of tourists.

A safari in Meru is a true adventure. In the open spaces, you can spot elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, as well as lions and cheetahs. Select areas of the park are also home to rhinos, whose conservation is a priority for the park management. Meru is also a paradise for birdwatchers – hundreds of species, both aquatic and savannah, fill the morning with their songs. Many lodges also offer guided walking tours, allowing you to discover flora and smaller animals that often escape a typical driving safari.

The best time to visit Meru is during the dry season, which runs from June to October and January to February. During this time, vegetation is sparse and wildlife is easier to spot at watering holes. During the rainy season, the landscape becomes greener and more picturesque, but roads can be more difficult to navigate, and some areas may be inaccessible.

There are two ways to reach Meru: by road or by plane. The drive from Nairobi takes about five to six hours, depending on road conditions. This is a good option for those who want to see other parts of Kenya along the way. For those who prefer convenience, charter and scheduled flights are available from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to small airstrips near the park, such as Kinna and Mulika.

When it comes to accommodation, Meru offers both luxury lodges and more intimate safari camps. The most famous is Elsa's Kopje, an elegant, eco-friendly lodge perched on a hill overlooking the park. This lodge was built in tribute to the famous lioness Elsa, raised by Joy and George Adamson, whose story is chronicled in the book "Born Free." There are also smaller, more affordable camps that offer full board, guided tours, and a truly immersive experience.

A typical Meru stay lasts three to five days. On the first day, tourists arrive at the park, rest after their journey, and embark on an afternoon game drive. On the second day, there are two game drives – one in the morning and one in the afternoon – when the animals are most active. The third day usually includes a final dawn game drive and a return to Nairobi or a continued journey to another park.

It's worth remembering that entry to the park is charged by the Kenya Wildlife Service. For foreign tourists, the fees range from a few dozen dollars a day and can be paid by card or through the official payment system. When planning your trip, it's a good idea to use the services of a reputable travel agency. CARTERwho knows the area and will provide transport, a guide and accommodation bookings.

For a trip to Meru, it's a good idea to pack light, airy clothes in natural colors, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera. Mornings can be chilly, so a warm sweatshirt is a good idea.
