Sardinia – the Italian island of many surprises

Sardinia is Italy's second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Its high, rocky coastlines guard against access to the mainland, while its lush vegetation, sandy beaches, and emerald sea captivate visitors. Sardinia is also the warmest place in Italy. It is renowned for its predominance of blazing sunny days each year, and its elegant resorts attract celebrities from around the world.

An island of rich past

According to estimates, the Sardenines arrived in Sardinia around 1000 BC, displacing the ancient Ligurians to the northern tip of the island. In the town of Nuoro, one can still see the temple of the god Baal, cemeteries, and the remains of the dwellings of the original Sardinian civilization. Nuraghe, megalithic structures in the shape of truncated cones, which still fascinate scientists, are a must-see on any trip to Sardinia. Over 7 nuraghes have survived to this day. Some believe Sardinia is the prototype of the mythical Atlantis, and the conical structures may evoke associations with the Atlantean culture described by Plato.

What is worth seeing in Sardinia?

A holiday in Sardinia is primarily associated with hot, sandy beaches and swimming in crystal-clear, turquoise waters. It's also about savoring excellent Italian cuisine and savoring fruity wine. However, it's worth knowing how to spice up your trip and make the most of what this Mediterranean resort has to offer. Sardinia's biggest attractions are undoubtedly the Grottoes of Neptune – the island's most famous caves. They can be accessed by boat from the sea or by climbing 600 steps. The view of the rocky coastline contrasting with the turquoise sea is certainly worth the effort.

While on holiday in Sardinia, it's worth exploring the Su Gorroppu gorge, one of the deepest canyons in Europe. It's an encounter with the wildest part of the island, and according to legend, somewhere nearby lies a place that guarantees longevity to visitors. To add variety to your holiday with children, it's worth taking advantage of a tour of the island from the perspective of the historic Trenino Verde train. The trip lasts several hours and passes through Sardinia's majestic mountain and rural landscapes. James Bond fans, on the other hand, are recommended to visit the Smeralda coast, where scenes for the 1976 film "007: The Spy Who Loved Me" were filmed.

Why are there flamingos in Sardinia?

Not everyone knows that flamingos can be spotted while on holiday in Sardinia. Thanks to the very humid areas and the numerous crustaceans they feed on, these pink birds have inhabited the island for generations. To see them up close, it's worth visiting the Molentargiusm reserve, the Santa Gilla pond, the area around Olbia, or the Bay of Chia. The latter is also worth visiting for some of Sardinia's most beautiful beaches.

When to go to Sardinia?

With so many sunny days, it's impossible to miss out on beautiful weather on the island. When vacationing in Sardinia during July and August, expect temperatures above 30°C.OC – ideal weather for heat-loving people and beachgoers. For those who prefer active lifestyles and slightly cooler weather, the spring and autumn months are best.
