Sicily – luxury holidays in southern Italy 2026/2027

Sicily is located south of the Apennine Peninsula, almost at the width of the first countries of North Africa. It is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Sicily occupies a special place in the history and map of Italy, because it is here that the legendary mafia was founded, which at one time greatly undermined the economy, and local residents still feel the effects of it. However, this is the charm of Sicily, which combines a lot of diversity: from its turbulent but very interesting history and fascinating monuments, through delicious Sicilian delicacies and exquisite wines, to some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, paradise islands and majestic volcanoes. The island offers a number of attractions for every type of holiday, and currently you can get here by many air connections from Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław and Katowice. An exclusive holiday in Sicily is within your reach, please contact your travel agency CARTER®.

What to see in Sicily?

The capital of the island is Palermo, which is located in the north, right on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Situated very strategically, it has a rich history and, therefore, is rich in monuments of various cultures and ages. Although many people immediately erase this city from their memory after the first impression, those who gave it a second chance eagerly return there again. Although crowded, chaotic and even governed by its own rules, Palermo is full of authenticity, interesting street art and the real life of southern Italians. Places worth visiting include particularly majestic palaces, e.g. the Norman Palace, huge cathedrals, among others. the one located in Monreale, and the largest opera theater in Italy - Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele.

In terms of breathtaking views and romantic spots, however, the eastern coast of Sicily has much more to offer. In the north-eastern part of the island, on the slopes of massive mountains, Taormina is located. This small town with a picture-postcard view of the historic Greek theater against the background of the blue sea and mighty Mount Etna is almost the quintessence of Sicily. Taormina has plenty of panoramic viewpoints, luxury shops and, as befits Italy, delicious restaurants, cafes and bars. An inspiration for many writers and artists, Taormina is a must-see on Italy's largest island.

More than 100 km south of Taormina is Syracuse, an ancient city that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to many data, everything indicates that Syracuse was inhabited already in the XNUMXth century BC, or even earlier. The city is rich in various monuments from the turn of many eras. The most famous of them refer to the well-known Greek and Roman mythologies. We will therefore have the opportunity to see here a temple built in honor of Apollo and Athena, the amazing altar of Zeus, the Ear of Dionysius, the Greek theater and a huge amphitheater.

Volcanoes in Sicily - entrance to Etna, Vulcano and Stromboli

When spending your holiday in Sicily, you must visit the largest and highest, and still active volcano in Europe - Etna. Located in the central-eastern part of Sicily, the Etna Regional Park attracts crowds of tourists. Around the massive volcano there are wide valleys with breathtaking views, and the higher we go, the more changes we see in the landscape around us. No vegetation, specific color of the earth, different air - climbing Etna is a unique experience and a phenomenal adventure. Old lava flows, craters and smaller volcanic cones are very popular during trips. Reaching the main crater is quite a challenge and few people decide to do such a feat. The height of Etna is constantly changing and currently reaches approximately 3 m above sea level

North of Sicily lie two volcanic islands: Vulcano and Stromboli. Vulcano is located approximately 40 km from the main island, and Stromboli is approximately 70 km from the main island, forming part of the Aeolian Islands archipelago. Both islands have a population of just a few hundred, and their volcanoes are still active and occasionally erupt. Stromboli is particularly spectacular, constantly erupting with smoke. Its last major eruption occurred in July and August 2024.
