Morocco - the city of Marrakesh

Marrakesh is one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco, tempting tourists with its majestic architecture, colorful mosaics and markets, as well as aromatic dishes. The origins of the metropolis date back to the 11th century, so you can admire many historical places and facilities here. The most famous square in the city, Djami al-Fnana, hosts a market that becomes bustling with life after dark, and this is just one of many great attractions here. How to plan a holiday in Marrakech? What should you include in your sightseeing plan?

The biggest attractions in Marrakech - the historic center

The city of Marrakech began to be built in the 1985th century, and a large part of its XNUMXth-century defensive walls have survived to this day. The material from which they were made is the famous red clay. Thanks to its characteristic color, Marrakesh was nicknamed the "Red City". Its medina, or old district, was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in XNUMX. On its territory you can visit many important buildings and facilities, and one of the most popular places with tourists is the phenomenal Djami-al-Fna Square, where a large gastronomic market takes place every evening. Travelers can not only taste local Moroccan specialties such as tagine, couscous and seafood, but also see a Berber snake charmer, juggler or shaman. It is worth starting your holiday in Marrakech here, because there is a good chance that you will want to come back here again and again.

The Booksellers' Mosque and monuments full of mosaics

During a trip to Marrakech, you must see the city's landmark - its largest mosque, Koutoubia, or the "Mosque of the Booksellers". The temple owes its name to the numerous manuscript sellers who once set up in its vicinity. It is the tallest building in the entire medina and can only be admired from the outside - tourists are not allowed inside. Another monument worth including when visiting Marrakech is Bab Agnaou, a wonderful gate from the 12th century. In its surroundings, tourists can visit beautifully decorated tombs - the Saadian Necropolis. This is a must-see for all those who came to Morocco on holiday primarily to see the phenomenal mosaics. The craftsmanship of their workmanship inside and in the courtyard of the mausoleums is breathtaking. Equally wonderful decorations and impressive gardens await visitors in the vast palaces of Marrakech. El-Bahia is the largest of them, distinguished by the colorful mosaics and the grand scale of its courtyards.

Colorful sukiand tropical gardens

Arab markets, or souks, are for many tourists one of the biggest attractions during their holidays in Morocco. They take place in almost every city, including Marrakech. Suki is a great place not only for collectors of travel souvenirs, but also for lovers of local, original handicrafts. It is full of multi-colored fabrics, tableware and dishes that can sometimes delight so much that tourists can easily forget about the main rule of Moroccan bazaars - haggling is a mandatory ritual, and the prices quoted may be even several times too high. A trip to Marrakech should also include a visit to one of the local gardens. Particularly noteworthy are Le Jardin Secret (French for "secret garden"), an oasis of vegetation hidden in the middle of the medina, allowing you to take a break from the crowd and noise of the markets, as well as the Majorelle Garden, full of cacti, palm trees and bright blue.

Marrakesh is one of the most colorful cities in Morocco. The coldest time of the year, when the temperature drops below 20 degrees Celsius, is in January and February. Any remaining month will be suitable to plan a holiday here, although it is worth avoiding the hottest July. Marrakech is an ideal travel destination for those who like to visit bustling cities, try aromatic dishes and find gems among local products at the markets.
