Kenya – holidays and trips to the most beautiful places in East Africa

Kenya is one of the most interesting natural countries in Africa. It is characterized by sun-baked, acacia-tree-covered, endless savannahs, snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya and numerous freshwater lakes, including: Lake Victoria, which is the largest reservoir in all of Africa. Kenya is a country of contrasts, because you can find here not only a wonderful sandy coast with leaning palm trees and warm waters of the Indian Ocean with a coral reef, but also national parks and nature reserves inhabited by numerous animals and birds - for this reason Kenya is the most frequently chosen destination. on safari.

When planning a trip, we ask ourselves many questions: what is worth seeing in Kenya? When is a good time to travel to Kenya? What is the best beach hotel for families with children? Office CARTER with several years of experience in organizing luxury travel, he is an ideal advisor and tour operator. Traveling to Kenya is a great idea for both family summer and winter holidays.

Weather and climate in Kenya

This country is located in the equatorial monsoon climate zone. There are two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. Rain falls mainly from late April to early June, and also from mid-October and November. Kenya has a tropical climate. It is always humid on the coast, while the rest of the country is rather dry. There are two dry seasons: from January to March and from July to the end of September, and two rainy seasons - in May and November. Daytime temperatures reach over 30°C during the day and 20°C at night. In upland areas, the temperature drops to 20°C during the day and 10°C at night.

When is it best to go to Kenya?

It is worth going to Kenya from December to the end of March, when the temperature reaches over 30 degrees Celsius and is favorable for sunbathing in the Indian Ocean. The second time when it is worth visiting Kenya is from July to mid-October. An important factor favoring travel during this period is a unique experience, the Great Migration in the Masai Mara Reserve. In June, millions of animals migrate from the Serengeti Plains in search of food, returning south at the end of September.

When looking for an idea for an exclusive safari, it is worth starting from places far from crowds of tourists. In the office's portfolio CARTER there are the best lodges in Kenya that guarantee an amazing African adventure, especially during individual trips with a qualified guide. The best lodges in Africa include: Mahali Mzuri – Virgin Limited Edition by Sir Richard Branson, providing its guests with the highest quality of services. What is worth seeing in Kenya?

When thinking about a trip to Africa, we imagine a wild savannah covered with tall grass and acacia trees with spreading crowns, as well as numerous herds of wildebeest and zebra crossing the Mara River during the famous great migration. This amazing natural phenomenon is one of the main reasons why tourists visit Kenya every year. But not only that Masai Mara reserve is worth seeing. During our trips, we try to show little-known places that are very rich in game.

Lake Nakuru National Park – anyone who thinks of Lake Nakuru imagines huge flocks of pink flamingos wading along the shore in search of food. This place is also home to a large population of white rhinos, but with a bit of luck you can also spot black rhinos.

Amboseli National Park located right next to the border with Tanzania, and owes its popularity to the Kilimanjaro massif, which is already outside the country. The animals that are easiest to see in Amboseli are elephants, gazelles, buffalos, zebras and wildebeests. Due to very good visibility, the flat areas encourage exploration.

Samburu National Reserve stretches just above the Ewaso Ngiro River. It is a mostly semi-arid region, covered with dried savannah dotted with acacia trees and majestic pride palms. In the reserve you can meet representatives of three large felines: lions, leopards and cheetahs. Grevy's zebras, reticulated giraffes and Somali blue-legged ostriches are also found here.

Laikipia Plateaustretches north-west of the Kenya massif. Due to the huge number of animals (in this respect it is only surpassed by the Masai Mara), it is a unique protected area. On the Laikipia Plateau there are, among others: the only population of the wild lion that is threatened with extinction in Africa, as well as as much as half of the population of black rhinos living in Kenya.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

How to get from Poland to Kenya?

There are numerous flight connections with only one transfer, including: Emirates, Qatar Airways, KLM, Air France and Lufthansa, which connect Poland with Nairobi - the capital of Kenya or Mombasa - on the coast of the Indian Ocean. When traveling further to national parks, it is worth choosing local light planes departing from the local Wilson airport.

Currency, dtravel documents, passport requirements and visas for Kenya

The currency in Kenya is the Kenyan shilling (KES). 100 shillings = $0,91. In all lodges and hotels you can pay in US dollars. Officially, the export of Kenyan currency is prohibited, so if there are any shillings left in your wallet after the trip, you can easily exchange them at the airport in Nairobi or Mombasa.

Polish citizens are obliged to have a valid passport for 6 months from the date of entry to Kenya. An entry visa can be purchased at the airport for USD 50 or you can apply for it online for the same price before travel (at least 3 days before) on the website http://evisa.go.ke/evisa.html.

What to take when going on safari to Kenya?

When flying on safari to Kenya, it is worth remembering that if our program includes flights on local planes, you should pack your luggage in a soft bag or backpack. Light planes have quite strict weight limits - up to 15 kg. Hard and larger suitcases may not be taken on board. We recommend taking light and airy clothes made of cotton or linen in neutral colors (so-called earth colors), i.e. beige, brown, khaki. Since the sun can be quite strong, it is worth taking long-sleeved shirts to protect your body from sunburn.

The following list will definitely help you properly pack for a safari trip:

  • airy cotton or linen shirts and blouses, preferably with long sleeves;
  • cotton long trousers, short shorts;
  • a warm sweatshirt or sweater, which may be useful during trips to cold areas (Mount Kenya National Park);
  • a change of trekking shoes and regular sneakers;
  • sunglasses, lip balm and cream with a high UV filter;
  • mosquito repellent;
  • headgear – a cap or hat that will protect the head from the equatorial sun;
  • camera;
  • a raincoat or windproof jacket for cooler mornings;
  • personal medications;
  • electric adapter (so-called switch).

Worth knowing

The electrical voltage is 22V. The sockets are prepared for plugs with three rectangular pins, so it is worth taking a travel adapter with you. In 2017, Kenya responded to environmental protection and introduced a ban on the use of various forms of plastic. For tourists, this means that they should avoid using plastic bags when packing their luggage. Failure to comply with the rules may result in a high fine or even imprisonment.

If you visit local villages, it is worth taking small gifts, e.g. notebooks, pens, crayons and toys, which are still missing in those areas. Gifts should be given to an adult. We strongly advise against giving children sweets, which unfortunately spoil their teeth. In these areas, dental treatment is almost non-existent.

Health and vaccinations before traveling to Kenya

There are no mandatory vaccinations when traveling to Kenya, but for your own protection and taking into account your next travel plans to Africa, it is worth taking them as part of prevention:

  • yellow fever - recommended (when traveling from Kenya to Tanzania (also to Zanzibar), having this vaccine is mandatory);
  • tetanus, typhoid fever, cholera, hepatitis A and B - the vaccine will protect against infections from contact with the ground, contaminated water or food;
  • you should take your personal medications with you if you take them constantly.
