A journey on the Pride of Africa, an exclusive colonial Rovos Rail train, through the beautiful scenery of southern Africa is a unique experience. CARTER invites travelers on this extraordinary trip, during which they will set off from Pretoria through the Drakensberg Mountains, Spionkop Game Reserve to Durban. The three-day route, full of picturesque landscapes and encounters with wild animals, will fill travelers with a weekend they will remember for a long time.

Trip plan:

1 Pretoria

Travel southeast through the Highveld and the Witwatersrand gold deposits towards Heidelberg, the site of the first gold mining on the Rand, and Balfour, a small mining town in Mpumalanga. Guests can freshen up in their suites before joining their fellow passengers in the lounge car and observation car.

13:00 p.m. – Lunch is served in the dining cars. The Drakensberg Mountains were named by Voortrekkers who thought the series of heavily eroded peaks reminded them of the spikes on a dragon's back, hence the name "Drakensberg" or Drakensberg in Afrikaans.

16:30 – Tea in the lounge car and observation car. The train ascends Majuba Hill - the site of the decisive battle that ended the First Boer-English War - then passes through Newcastle, home to the largest domed Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere.

11:00 – The dining car serves brunch. Then transfer (±30 minutes) to Spionkop Lodge for the afternoon. There are two tours to choose from. Listening to the history of the Battle of Spionkop OR 2. Ride in an off-road vehicle around an 11-acre reserve.

19:30 – Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Estcourt. Dress code: Formal. Shortly after Chieveley, on the right side of the tracks, stands a memorial to Winston Churchill, who was imprisoned here in November 1899 while trying to free an armored train trapped in a Boer ambush.
