The still undiscovered beauty of America, or a luxurious trip to Colombia

Drugs, Pablo Escobar, high crime - this was the reality of this country for years, effectively keeping mass tourist traffic away. Many people still look at the country in this stereotypical way, although Colombia has undergone major changes in recent years. It is still a country full of fierce and temperamental people, but that is also its beauty. Colombians are cheerful and friendly, above all they love life and are in no hurry. It is a country where Indian beliefs and traditions intertwine with the culture brought by Europeans, creating an absolutely unique mix, as colorful as the birds of paradise inhabiting the local selva. It is a country pulsating with the sounds of cumbia, proud of its cultural heritage. Gabriel Garcia Marquez, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, comes from Colombia. Marquez is considered one of the greatest writers of the trend called magical realism, in which reality mixes with fantasy. It's a great starting point for getting to know Colombia, which is exactly what it is: a little real, a little out of this world.

The greatest attractions of Colombia

The natural and cultural wealth of this country is enormous. In the north, the coast of Colombia is washed by the waters of the Caribbean Sea. The largest tourist center of this region is the city of Cartagena, famous for its well-preserved fort from the times of American colonization, as well as its interesting nightlife. Bustling pubs are almost never empty, inviting guests to have fun with music and a glass of rum.

Another important place in this part of the country is the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range, a real gem and unique in the world. The highest peak of the massif, and also of the entire Colombia, rising to a height of 5775 m above sea level, Columbus Peak is only fifty kilometers from the Caribbean Sea. Such an incredible elevation of the terrain makes the local ecosystem and landscapes difficult to compare with other places on earth.

In the central, mountainous part of the country, there are its largest cities - Bogota, Cali and Medellin. Especially the latter, called the city of eternal spring, deserves attention. It was in Medellin that the cartel led by Pablo Escobar had its headquarters. Today, it is definitely safer than in the past, it is one of the most interesting cities in the country due to its mild climate and student character.

Not far from Medellin there is a coffee region, i.e. mountainous areas covered with rainforest and coffee plantations, which tastes different in such a place than in a restaurant.

On the border with Venezuela, in the Orinoco lowland, there are grassy plains called llanos. In often swampy areas you can meet many wild animals, including capybaras, caimans and anacondas.

Southwest Colombia is occupied by the Amazon Basin. The most important town in the region is the border town of Leticia, from which you can take a boat to Iquitos, Peru.

Individual trips to Colombia with a travel agency

Colombia is a country that has not yet been polluted by mass tourism, which means that traveling on your own may be troublesome due to the not very well-developed infrastructure or lack of European amenities. In terms of comfort, safety or even trips to attractions worth seeing, trips to Colombia with a travel agency are definitely more comfortable. You can expect that a trip to Colombia with a travel agency is the best option, because they will take care of all formalities for you, ensure your safety and prepare a detailed trip plan thanks to contacts with local partners specializing in this field.

When is the best time to go to Colombia?

When choosing the best month to travel to Colombia, you should base it most on the activities you plan to do. If you are interested in blissful relaxation on the beach combined with trekking in the mountains and all kinds of activities, the most optimal time will be to travel between December and March. During these months there is little rainfall and very pleasant temperatures. It is also worth knowing that the climate in Colombia is very diverse. It can be divided into individual zones, called levels: hot, humid, cool, cold and glacial. Starting from the north of the country, we can expect heat and humid Caribbean air, while going further south - especially if we intend to travel to the Andes - we will encounter cool and cold zones. The least suitable time to visit Colombia is between May and September. During these months, the air humidity exceeds 85%, which is often difficult to bear, especially for unaccustomed travelers. Outside of the above months, you can expect tolerable temperatures and quite little rainfall.
