Here is a sample program for visiting the northern and southern parts of the country during a 5-day trip to Laos:

Day 1: Luang Prabang

Visiting the former capital of Laos - Luang Prabang; lying on the right bank of the Mekong River. Luang Prabang was the capital of the country until 1975, and currently has approximately 55 inhabitants. The city is surrounded by limestone hills and is located where the Nam Khan River turns briefly to the right and flows into the Mekong. According to many visitors' opinions, Luang Prabang is considered the most beautiful city in Laos and one of the most beautiful cities in all of Indochina. UNESCO included Luang Prabang on the World Cultural Heritage List due to the fascinating combination of traditional architecture and urban development created by the French during the colonial period in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. To this day, in the old part of the city, you can see gems of French colonial architecture and feel the post-colonial atmosphere. There are beautiful old residences here, which are often turned into intimate hotels, boutiques or restaurants. The night market is a big tourist attraction. Wat Xiang Thong is the most important Buddhist monastery in the country - the Golden City Monastery, and visiting the National Museum. The museum is located in a former royal residence, where we will see the wonderful cultural heritage of Laos, from the era of the earliest kings to the years of independence. Continue exploring the city's most famous monuments: the amazing Wat Visoun Stupa, the residence of the Sangkharat (Supreme Buddhist Patriarchs). Dinner at one of the local restaurants or an optional lesson in cooking local dishes.

Day 2: Luang Prabang – Kuang Si Waterfall – Pak Ou Cave

That day, we woke up early to observe the famous alms giving ceremony in Luang Prabang. Buddhism is very deeply rooted in Lao culture. After breakfast, a trip to Kuang Si Waterfalls, located 30 kilometers from the city, with crystal clear water in which you can swim. The best time to visit the falls is between December and April. Trekking and picnic lunch, and for those interested, entry to the Kuang Si Butterfly Park. After lunch, take a boat trip up the Mekong River and visit the Pak Ou Caves located between the Mekong and Ou Rivers. The sanctuary in Pak Ou consists of two large caves, each containing thousands of Buddha figures, varying in size - from a few centimeters to two meters high. Return to Luang Prabang for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Luang Prabang – Pakse – Champasak and Wat Phou temple

After breakfast, flight from Luang Prabang to the south of Laos, to Pakse. Arrival and visit to the ruins of Wat Phou Khmer temples, listed on the UNESCO list. These are one of the most interesting temples in Laos, in the same style as the famous Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The vast Khmer Empire also occupied part of present-day Laos. Overnight in Pakse.

Day 4: Don Phong – Khon Phapheng – Pakse

After breakfast, transfer to the town of Ban Khone, which has perfectly preserved traces of French colonialism. Charming Ban Khone is a fishing village famous for growing coconuts, kapok, cotton and bamboo. The Laotian atmosphere there is dominant and very tangible. Transfer to Liphi Falls, located on the border of Cambodia and Laos, and the famous Khon Phapheng waterfalls, including the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia through which the Mekong is not fully navigable. The total drop is 21 meters and its width of 10,783 m gives it the first place in the world. A characteristic feature of these waterfalls is that they have a large number of river branches and thousands of islands. Thanks to this, the area was named Si Phan Don, or the Land of 4000 Islands. At the end of the XNUMXth century, the French tried to sail through the falls, but their efforts were not successful. Transfer to Pakse.

Day 5: Boloven Plateau – coffee and tea plantations

After breakfast, we will see the greatest attractions of the Boloven Plateau; is the crater of an extinct volcano at an altitude of between 1000 and 1300 meters above sea level with a diameter of about 40 kilometers. It is an extremely picturesque region located between the Vietnamese border and the Mekong River from the west. Thanks to the very fertile land, many plantations of coffee, tea and spices such as cardamom and pepper were established here. This region is inhabited by numerous ethnic groups. The tour program includes, among others, a visit to the Museum of Ethnic Minorities living in the southern part of Laos. Visit to Tadlo, located on the northern edge of the plateau, next to the Xeset waterfall. After a lunch break, we will visit the Alack and Nge ethnic groups. On the way back to Pakse, we will stop at the 120-meter Tad Fane waterfall and at a coffee and tea plantation, where we can taste these drinks and have the opportunity to buy them. Return to Pakse and overnight stay or flight to another fascinating destination: the capital of Laos Vientiane, the bustling Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) or to relax on the beaches of Cambodia or Vietnam.
