Mongolia Ski Nature Reserve

The Faces of Mongolia is an expedition showing both deserts and the green Jalman meadows covered with a carpet of flowers in summer, entering the edge of forest-covered Siberia. These meadows lie within the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area. Accommodation outside the capital is organized in exclusive, luxurious yurt camps (called ger). During the expedition, Luxury Travel guests will learn about the life of nomads living in remote areas and the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar.

Trip plan:

1 Ulaanbaatar

Upon arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, guests will be greeted by a guide and driver and transferred to the hotel. Guests can spend the rest of the day exploring the city. It is worth visiting Suche Bator Square - the most representative point of the city, the place where the country's independence was announced in 1921. Surrounding the square are the Parliament, the National Museum of Mongolian History, the Natural History Museum and the colonnaded monument of Genghis Khan. The most important monument of Ulaanbaatar is the Gandantegchinlen Chijd Buddhist monastery, which is the most important cult center in Mongolia. Its construction began in 1838, and for many years it was the only active monastery in the country. The interior of the temple houses valuable manuscripts, numerous sculptures, monuments of religious painting and artistic crafts. The most impressive thing is the over 25 m high gold-plated Buddha sculpture. Another interesting monument is the palace of Bogd Khan, the last khan of Mongolia. The complex located in the southern part of the city consists of six temples, and inside the palace you can, among others, admire the ruler's throne and bed, as well as the khan's beautifully decorated yurt.

Overnight stay at the luxurious Shangri-La hotel in a Deluxe Twin room. The offer does not include meals. The Shangri-La Hotel is located in the heart of the city and is an ideal base for sightseeing. The hotel's restaurant, Ulaanbaatar's Café Park, offers dishes from all over the world, and its hallmark is its open kitchen, where you can watch exquisite specialties being made. The Naadam restaurant, located on the 2nd floor, offers a terrace with views of the city and the surrounding mountains. Hutong, a Chinese restaurant, serves Dongbei cuisine, and drinks and afternoon tea are served in the lobby lounge.

2 Region Elst

After breakfast, guests will go to the railway station, where the train leaves at 10.10:6 in the morning. For the next 45 hours they will travel through the grassy steppe, slowly changing into the drier steppes of the Gobi. Guests will disembark in Tsomog, near the small village of Dalanjargalan, where their driver will be waiting for them. The last 360 km separate them from their private camp, the XNUMX° Wilderness Camp in Elst, built from traditional Mongolian yurts. The name Elst indicates that there are small sand dunes in this region.

3 Region Elst

Guests stay at the camp in Elst for another day, exploring a wild corner of Mongolia with unusual rock formations, dunes and grasses growing up to 2 m high. There is a small seasonal lake in the area, in which you can sometimes see sea fins (Triops sp.), a relative of similar ancient creatures found in the deserts of Central Asia and the southwestern deserts of the USA. There are many petroglyphs and ancient rock works in the area. It is also one of the parts of the Gobi richest in wildlife. During trips, travelers may come across herds of wild Altai sheep (Ovis ammon) and Siberian ibexes (capra sibirica).

4 Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve

After breakfast, the guests' luggage and necessary supplies will be loaded onto camel-drawn carts, and in a caravan, with a guide, they will set off for trekking in the Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Reserve. It is a rock maze in which you can easily get lost. Participants will visit the ruins of the temple, destroyed during Stalin's purges in the 30s. Due to terrible legends, the local population avoids this place. There are also fantastic petroglyphs in the reserve, as well as ancient Hunnu tombs and from the Turkish Khanate, Imperial and Manchu times. All archaeological layers of Mongolian history are present here.

The Ikh Nartiin Chuluu reserve is home to approximately 1000 Altai sheep, the largest wild mountain sheep in the world. While there is no guarantee that you will be able to see them, they are actually not particularly shy. There are also about 200 Siberian ibexes living on the rocky ledges. Periodically, herds of Mongolian dogwoods (Procapra gutturosa) migrate through this area. The reserve also has a significant population of Eurasia's largest vulture, the chestnut vulture (Aegypius monachus).

These are beautiful meadows covered with wild flowers in summer. They lie within the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, which is the only truly wild region in Mongolia, stretching all the way to the border with Russia. Here there is a transition zone between the steppes and the southern range of the Siberian taiga. Therefore, guests will find steppe valleys, green meadows along the Tuul Gol River, as well as vast larch forests with birch groves. In summer, there is plenty of wild game here - wolves, lynxes, brown bears, red deer, deers and wild boars - but they are hidden and difficult to see. The place is fantastic for hiking and horseback riding trips, as well as other trips - rafting, kayaking or a moment of rest in a sauna in a yurt on the river bank.
