Singapore is an island city - a country with a small area, located on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The archipelago is surrounded by the waters of the Singapore Strait, connecting the Strait of Malacca with the South China Sea.

Its name comes from the words simha and pure meaning a lion and a city, respectively, which is why Singapore is often called the Lion City. The Merlion is the national symbol of Singapore. At every step we can meet his statue depicting a creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Despite its small size, Singapore surprises and delights with its diversity, cultural richness and local color. Singapore's culture is, above all, a fascinating mixture of European, Malay, Indian and Chinese influences, and next to New York, Tokyo and London, it is one of the most important financial centers, second only to Japan in Asia. This place exudes modernity, although there is no shortage of local culture and customs that may surprise Europeans. Before traveling, it is worth knowing that the law there is quite restrictive and, among other things, it is forbidden to chew gum in public places or show affection to each other, and the penalties are high enough that everyone follows the regulations. It should also be added that this city is an example in terms of order.

Singapore – A bit of history

The year 1511 is the period in history when the Portuguese reached Singapore and occupied the island. Other colonizers began to appreciate Singapore's strategic location, and from 1641 the area was managed by the Dutch, and in 1819 the English arrived here. The first Briton was Stamford Raffles, who opened a British trade representative office on the island on behalf of the East India Company.

Singapore was leased in 1819 as a trading post from the Johor Sultanate, and in 1826 the British purchased Singapore from the Sultan. It was from then on mainly used as a naval base. In 1867, Singapore received the status of a colony, thanks to which it became part of the British Empire. In the years 1924-1938, the largest military naval base was built in Sembawang. During World War II, Japanese troops invaded from the peninsula and captured the island without much resistance. During the war, from 1942 to 1945, Singapore was occupied by the Japanese. After the war, there was a period of renewed British influence, and between 1963 and 1965 the island had an episode of being part of the Federation of Malaysia. The city gained independence only on August 9, 1965.

Today's Singapore is inhabited by 5 inhabitants, inhabiting 607 administrative districts, gathered in 300 main regions. Its area covers 55 km². The highest peak is Bukit Timah, only 5 m above sea level. This small city-state is characterized by great cultural wealth and religious diversity. The official currency in force in the country since 576 is the Singapore dollar (SGD).
