Throughout southern Spain, the climate for playing golf is perfect. Suggested best golf courses in Spain:

Real Club Valderrama

Jaime "Jimmy" Ortiz Patiño is a businessman well-known in the golf and bridge community who bought the course in 1985 and invested heavily in its development, resulting in one of the best golf courses in Spain. Located in the south of the country, west of the famous Marbella, between Estepona and Algeciras. Every golf enthusiast has heard of the so-called "Augustus of Europe". Valderrama is the best course in Spain and one of the best in Europe. The course has hosted many tournaments such as the Volvo Masters, Amex, Andalucia Masters, Spanish Open and the Ryder Cup in 1997. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1974 as "Sotogrande New", and finally in 1984 it was named Valderrama. The fairways on the course have been described by professionals as the best in Europe, if not the world.

Jaime unfortunately did not live to see June 2014 when His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain honored Valderrama with the royal title, hence the name Real.

Royal Sotogrande Golf Club

It is very rare to find a course on Spain's southern Costa del Sol that was designed over 50 years ago, and even rarer is that playing on this course for over five decades is a great test for even the best golfers. Let's go back a long way to 1964 when Sotogrande was a largely uninhabited area north of Gibraltar with a small number of people living in nearby villages. American Joseph McMicking, living in the Philippines, visited Sotogrande and immediately noticed the great potential of the land around it, the wonderful weather and, finally, the proximity of the stunning coastline. This is how one of the largest residential investments in Europe at that time and its first golf course - Real Club de Golf Sotogrande - were created. Like Valderrama, it is a private course for club members that maintains an atmosphere of relaxation and restrained sophistication while welcoming visitors eagerly and warmly. From 1998 to 2001, Sotogrande served as the final qualifier for the European Tour and its class and quality gained a global reputation. The architect, as in the case of Valderrama, is Trent Jones, who once described the golf course as a place of fighting, where players attack, and the task of the course architect is to defend it.

Renovations in 2015-16 enlarged the greens by 40% and made some of the holes a bit easier by widening the fairways. During the renovation, over 37 hectares of Bermuda grass were laid.

Abama Golf – The Ritz-Carlton Abama

Ritz-Carlton Abama is the most prestigious resort in the Canary Islands.

Rising on the western face of the Teide volcano, the Abama golf course was created in this beautiful place by world-famous golf designer Dave Thomas in 2005. This championship-class course is maintained in immaculate conditions and the course contains over 300 species of subtropical plants, including over 20 palm trees. Almost every of the 000 holes has spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and the island of La Gomera nearby. The course is challenging enough for the best golfers, with 18 lakes scattered over constantly changing terrain, but also waterfalls and precisely placed white sand bunkers. The terrain of the Abama golf course is so diverse that each buddy has a built-in GPS to make it easier for players to move around it. You will certainly remember the famous ten, the Par 22 hole, where the difference in terrain is very large and changes several times, leads through lakes and waterfalls and numerous bunkers on the right - this is one of the holes that you will remember from playing at the Abama Golf Course.

THE PGA Catalunya Stadium Golf Course

With the help of golf legend Neil Coles, the European Tour was designed with The Ryder Cup in mind. The course is very spacious and would allow over 30 spectators to watch the competition of the best players, however, the takeover of the PGA Catalunya Resort by the Irish entrepreneur Denis O'Brien (successful owner of the well-known Quinta do Lago in Portugal) in 000 brought new life to this significant investment site, culminating in the creation of luxury golf resort.

This spectacular and impressive golf course has been consistently ranked among the ten best golf courses in Europe since its opening in 1999 and was also voted fourth in continental Europe. The course hosts numerous PGA European Tour events. However, don't let the beauty of the course fool you, it is very demanding with trees "pressing" the fairways, strategically placed bunkers and lakes that can be found on at least 7 of the most difficult holes. This feature brings players back to PGA Catalunya Stadium again and again. It is rare to find a course where every hole provides many emotions and challenges. The holes are mostly elevated and many fairways climb uphill.

It is a masterpiece, because it is difficult to describe this demanding, unique and beautiful golf course in any other way. For two decades, it has been one of the best choices of lovers of this beautiful game - golf. It is not without reason that the course hosts the Spanish Open tournaments. It is one of the most difficult golf courses where every hole is a challenge for the best.
