Cappadocia – Turkey's lunar treasure
Cappadocia is often called the land of the moon - and not without reason. It owes its unusual nickname to the specific terrain. The mentioned region is decorated with characteristic tuff forms, made of light volcanic rock. Every year on holidays or longer, exclusive holidays, hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world come here to admire extraordinary works of art, which are the work of Mother Nature herself. However, beautiful landscapes are not all that Cappadocia has to offer. A lot of unforgettable experiences await visitors.
Cappadocia – the most important information
Cappadocia is a land located in the central part of Anatolia. In 1985, it was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its special cultural and natural values. In this area you can find sanctuaries carved in the rock, evidence of Byzantine art, which most likely existed already in the post-iconoclastic period.
Moreover, the entire region is quite unusual by its nature. Its uniqueness is proven by the fact that it was created over 60 million years ago as a result of the activity of three volcanoes. Importantly, the landscape formed at that time is constantly changing as a result of erosion processes. So you never know exactly what tourists who come here for vacation will see.
The biggest attractions in Cappadocia
A hot air balloon flight is certainly a must-see on the map of Cappadocia's holiday attractions. Sunrise seen from an aerial perspective is an experience that cannot be compared to any other experience. It stays in your memory for a long time and provides many amazing emotions. After landing, it is worth going to the town of Goreme, where there is an open-air museum with 30 temples carved in the rock. All of them were created between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. The Church of the Apple (Elmalı Kilise) deserves special attention. Its interior is decorated with hand-painted frescoes.
While on holiday in Cappadocia, you must also visit Uchisar Castle, which is also the highest hill in the region. The Derinkuyu Underground City is of no less interest among tourists. It was here that Christians hid during invasions and persecutions for their faith. Contrary to appearances, the mentioned "town" has extensive infrastructure. It covers eight levels and numerous corridors along with rooms, stables and even wineries. The lowest points of the city reach 55 meters into the ground.
