Chasing the Northern Lights

National parks, volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and glaciers - in Iceland guests will find all this and more. Iceland tempts with excellent cuisine, amazing views and a sky illuminated with millions of stars and the northern lights. We invite you on a two-week escapade to the closest end of the world, where tiny towns crouch above the turbulent waters of fjords, above which glaciers and volcanoes rise. Our guides will explain what the aurora borealis is and, weather permitting, will help you observe it.

Trip plan:

1 Arrival in Reykjavík

From Keflavík Airport, guests will transfer to a luxury hotel in Reykjavík. After settling in, they will have the opportunity to discover the charms of the Icelandic capital on their own.

2 Reykjavík – Borgarfjörður fjord – Borgarnes

In the morning, guests and their guide will set off to explore Reykjavík. Then they will go west to the Borgarfjörður fjord. This region is called the Saga Valley of West Iceland because many important historical events took place here. Guests will also have the opportunity to climb the crater of the Grábrók volcano and warm up at the Deildartunguhver. It is the largest hot spring not only in Iceland, but in all of Europe, emitting 180 liters of almost boiling water per second. Additionally, they will visit Hraunfossar - over 100 miniature waterfalls flowing from under a wide field of hardened lava, and Barnafoss, i.e. "Children's Waterfall", whose name is related to a certain tragic story from many years ago. Transfer to Borgarnes. In the afternoon, guests will listen to a lecture about the Northern Lights, and after dinner they will spend the rest of the evening in the hotel garden, where they will observe this amazing phenomenon with a cup of hot chocolate in their hand.

3 Borgarnes – Snæfellsnes peninsula – Borgarnes

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is located in the western part of Iceland. It is often called Iceland in a nutshell because it has many landscapes characteristic of this country. A mountain range runs along the peninsula. From the charming fishing town of Stykkishólmur, guests will embark on a cruise during which they will admire the Breiðafjörður fjord. After a light lunch, guests will have a real treat - at the Bjarnarhöfn farm they will have the opportunity to try a real Icelandic delicacy called hakarl. This mysterious name refers to a dish made of fermented shark meat. Then, depending on road and weather conditions, guests will visit the fishing village of Grundarfjörður, which boasts an impressive coastline, majestic mountains, tranquil lakes and waterfalls. The iconic mountain, Kirkjufell, one of the most photographed attractions in Iceland, dominates the horizon here. On the way back to Borgarnes, the guide will give guests practical tips on how to photograph the Northern Lights. However, as soon as darkness falls, guests will go in search of the aurora borealis. They will also be able to soak in the hotel's outdoor jacuzzi.

4 Borgarnes – Golden Circle

Today, guests will travel along the Hvalfjörður fjord. First, they will visit a shop selling Icelandic wool products, and then Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another attraction on the so-called route The Golden Circle will be the Geysir geothermal field, where there is a geyser of the same name and the Strokkur geyser, which erupts every 5-10 minutes. Guests will visit a local restaurant where the chef serves freshly baked food hverabraud(traditional Icelandic dark rye bread baked in specially dug pits near hot springs), served with Icelandic butter, soft-boiled eggs and herring. The meal is best enjoyed with a small glass of well-chilled Geysir Schnapps. After lunch, guests will head to the majestic Gullfoss (Golden Falls) waterfall. This most famous waterfall in Iceland attracts tourists from all over the world in both summer and winter. In the afternoon, guests will learn something about Icelandic horses and visit a geothermal greenhouse. Accommodation in a luxurious hotel in the southern part of Iceland, and in the evening you can observe the Northern Lights while basking in the jacuzzi located in the hotel garden.

5 Eyjafjallajökull – Skógafoss – Reynisfjara – Kirkjubæjarklaustur

On this day, guests will travel along the southern coast of Iceland. At the Eyjafjallajökull Information Center, they will learn what life is like near a glacier and an active volcano, whose sudden eruption in 2010 caused aviation paralysis in Europe. They will also visit one of Iceland's best open-air museums, which houses several turf houses covered with grass and an excellent collection of household appliances showing how Icelanders lived centuries ago. Nearby there is the Skógafoss waterfall, which is 60 m high and is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. In the afternoon, guests will walk along the cliffs on the black beach of Reynisfjara. Overnight stay near Kirkjubæjarklaustur, within Vatnajökull National Park, which, set away from the city lights, is an ideal place to observe the Northern Lights.

6 Kirkjubæjarklaustur – Jökulsárlón – Skaftafell National Park - Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Today's sightseeing program will focus primarily on ice, glaciers and icebergs. Guests will go to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon where you can watch seals swimming between drifting icebergs. In the afternoon, they will visit the small peat church in Hof, and then the largest national park in Europe, Skaftaffel, which includes the highest mountains in Iceland and the largest European glacier, Vatnajökull. In the evening, guests will watch a film presentation about the northern lights.

7 Kirkjubæjarklaustur – Seljalandsfoss – Reykjavík – Blue Lagoon – Reykjavík

From Kirkjubæjarklaustur, guests will travel through the Eldhraun lava field to the village of Vík, home to a black beach with high cliffs. Then, guests will hike to the extremely picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Water falls here from a 60-meter cliff, and a walk along the path leading behind the falling water will certainly be a wonderful experience - provided that guests are not afraid of getting wet. In the afternoon, guests will return to Reykjavík and will have approximately 2 hours. free time to explore the capital of Iceland on your own. In the evening, a visit to the famous Blue Lagoon geothermal swimming pool, followed by an Icelandic dinner at the exclusive Northern Light Inn Hotel and a night expedition in search of the Northern Lights. Return to Reykjavík at midnight. Accommodation.

8 Reykjavik

Free time to discover the charms of the capital of Iceland: visiting museums, shopping or enjoying spa treatments. In the evening, a cruise on the sea in search of the Northern Lights (the cruise may be canceled due to bad weather conditions, and its cost will not be refunded - guests will receive a voucher that they can use for dinner at the Kopar restaurant in the port).

9 Reykjavík – Grábrók – Víðimýri – Akureyri

Guests will meet their guide at 9.00:XNUMX a.m. and go to the crater of the Grábrók volcano. They will also visit the Natural History Museum and the peat church in Víðimýri. They will travel along picturesque fjords to Akureyri, the capital of northern Iceland. In the evening, if weather conditions allow, there will be another opportunity to observe the Northern Lights.

10 Akureyri – Goðafoss – Lake Mývatn

Guests will start the day with a self-guided tour of Akureyri, Iceland's second largest city. There are great museums and a geothermal swimming pool. After lunch, they will go to the Christmas Garden, where you can buy countless Christmas products. The next stop will be Goðafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods. Finally, guests will arrive at Lake Mývatn, known as a winter wonderland, where they will stay for three nights. In the evening, a lecture about the northern lights, and after dinner, another opportunity to observe this spectacular phenomenon.

11 Lake Mývatn (Námaskarð and Lake Mývatn Nature Baths)

Lake Mývatn is an excellent place for observing many species of birds, and the area is also home to many geological wonders. Guests will be able to walk among strange lava formations and admire the picturesque landscape. Later, they will visit the hot springs at Námaskarð with its muddy pools and steaming solfataras. They will try traditional dark volcanic bread, baked underground in specially dug pits near hot springs. After dinner, guests can relax in the thermal baths of Lake Mývatn and watch the Northern Lights.

12 Lake Mývatn (Dimmuborgir)

In the morning, a snowshoe expedition (or hiking, if there is no snow) through the Dimmuborgir lava formations. In the afternoon, free time to visit the pseudocraters, walk along the lake shores or take part in an optional cross-country skiing or snowmobile trip (depending on snow cover and the number of participants; warm winter clothing, a hat and gloves are required). In the evening, a video presentation about the northern lights, and after a hearty dinner, watching the northern lights.

13 Lake Mývatn – Dalvík – Tröllaskagi – Siglufjörður

On this day, guests will visit the bird museum and then travel to Dalvík, where they will stop at a local microbrewery and taste one of Iceland's beers. In the afternoon, they will drive along Eyjafjörður, the longest fjord in Iceland, to the Tröllaskagi peninsula, and along the way they will stop in a secluded fjord valley. They will then reach Siglufjörður, Iceland's northernmost city, also known as the herring capital of the North Atlantic. They will visit the herring museum here. Overnight stay at the beautifully situated Siglo Hotel, which offers spectacular hot tubs with geothermal water located in the local fjord.

14 Skagafjörður – Glaumbær – Reykjavík

The return journey to Reykjavík will take you along picturesque fjords and through the Skagafjörður Valley. Guests will visit the only tannery in Europe that produces fish leather, and in the afternoon they will visit the folk museum and the Glaumbær peat farm, where the houses are covered with grass. Later, they will stop for coffee and cake at a horse farm, where they will learn about the history of Icelandic horses. They will arrive in Reykjavík between 18.00 and 20.00 p.m., depending on weather and road conditions. Accommodation in a luxury hotel and overnight stay.

15 Departure from Iceland

Transfer to Reykjavík airport. Departure to the country.
