Here are the most interesting attractions in Tanzania that you must visit during your safari:

Serengeti

Serengeti is the oldest national park in Tanzania, established in 1951. Name serengeti in the local Maasai language it means 'the place where the earth stretches into infinity'. It is located in the north of the country, and its plains and savannas cover approximately 15 square kilometers. Wild areas abound in game and birds, with approximately 500 species there. Among them, beautiful ostriches, armed warriors, dignified secretaries (so-called snake eaters), colorful parrots, sad marabouts and vultures waiting for food. The Serengeti is home to the famous "Big Five". Animals included in this distinguished group are considered very valuable and at the same time the most dangerous. The Big Five includes the lion, buffalo, black rhinoceros, leopard (African leopard) and African elephant. The main and biggest attraction of the Serengeti is the annual one animal migration, known to us in particular from extraordinary National Geographic programs.

The Great Migration of Animals - the most interesting attractions of Tanzania

The Great Migration of Animals in Tanzania it is one of the greatest natural spectacles on Earth. Every year, one and a half million wildebeests, two hundred thousand zebras and about half a million Thomson's gazelles make their way through the rains and seasonal green pastures. If you want to guarantee the best accommodation for observing this amazing event on the Tanzanian savannah, it is worth booking the trip up to a year in advance.

Around April, wildebeests with their young move to the north of Tanzania, in June they reach the Grumeti River, in July and August large groups move through the middle of the Serengeti to reach the Mara River in September. It constitutes the border between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and is also a natural obstacle on the route of migrating animals. High slopes on the bank of the rushing river and numerous crocodiles lurking in the waters pose a real challenge to migration. Unfortunately, not all antelopes and zebras will reach the fertile pastures of the Masai Mara. The incredibly rich and unique life of the park resulted in it being included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Ngorongoro Crater

Known as the Eighth Wonder of the World, the Ngorongoro Crater is an attraction in itself and unique in Africa. It is located 180 kilometers from Arusha. The extinct volcano's caldera was probably formed two or three million years ago. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area includes Oldupai Gorge, which is part of the Great Eastern Rift Valley. Ngorongoro, with an area of over 312 km² and a diameter of up to 22 km, is the largest crater in the world. Rare rhinos, African buffalos, elephants, wildebeests, cow antelopes, marabou and flamingos live at its bottom. It is estimated that about 25000 animals live in the entire crater zone. Part of the antelope population leaves the boundaries of the caldera in search of food during the rainy season. A protected habitat for over 120 species of mammals, including the African Big Five, it is one of the most interesting safari destinations in Africa.

Lake Manyara

It is a freshwater lake in the north of Tanzania, part of which and adjacent areas have been protected as part of the Lake Manyara National Park since 1960. Lake Manyara is famous for its flocks of pelicans and flamingos, as well as the rare tree-climbing lions. Treetops are their favorite place to spot their prey from above. This extraordinary park in the shadow of the Great Rift Valley attracts a variety of animal species: baboons, monkeys, antelopes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, buffalos, giraffes and large groups of elephants. The picturesque areas at the bottom of the African Rift Valley are covered with savannah, including sausage trees and many rare species of palm trees. Due to the rich vegetation, dense leafy thickets, streams, waterfalls and grassy meadows right next to the lake, the park is inhabited by many species of animals, despite its small area. If one wants to be guaranteed to encounter many different animals during a safari trip in a short period of time, he or she should visit the Lake Manyara region.

Manyara National Park stretches over an area of 330 square kilometers, of which 230 km is occupied by Lake Manyara itself. The mouth of the Ndala River in the southern part is the region where we can find hot springs. In the center of the park there is a lake with a waterfall where you can admire countless flamingos, pelicans and hippos hiding in the water. It is a real paradise for lovers of photographing birds and wild animals.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is also among the most interesting attractions in Tanzania. It ranks second in terms of the density of inhabited animals. The park was created in 1970 on an area of 2600 km². Its name comes from the Tarangire River that flows through its area. This park is characterized by beautiful views of the endless savannah interspersed with acacias and baobab trees. You can see large wild animals here all year round, including leopards, lions, buffalos, wildebeests, zebras and gazelles. If you're lucky, you can even spot endangered antelope species such as the great kudu and oryx. Tarangire Park is home to a large number of elephants, which occur in groups of 500-600 individuals. It is also a paradise for bird lovers; it is estimated that there are about 550 species there.

Selous Reserve

Covering an impressive area of 54 square kilometers, the Selous Reserve is one of the largest protected areas of fauna and flora in the world. The name was given to honor the British explorer Frederick Selous, who died in the area fighting the Germans during the First World War. Due to the presence of numerous endemic species of plants and animals, the reserve has rightly been on the famous UNESCO World Heritage List since 600.

Mikumi National Park

This national park with an area of 3230 square kilometers is the fourth largest park in Tanzania. The landscape is somewhat reminiscent of the Serengeti, it lies between two spectacular mountain ranges - Udzungwa and Uluguru. Mikumi borders the Selous Reserve, creating a huge natural ecosystem unique in the world. The picturesque savannahs are dotted with acacia trees, giant baobab trees, tamarind trees and, here and there, palm trees. Mikumi is famous for lions that climb tree trunks and sleep in treetops and the Big Five. No problem, in one day you can also see groups of hippos near water reservoirs, as well as majestic giraffes, zebras and several dozen species of birds.

Ruah Park

It was protected already in 1910. It is famous for its endemic species of monkeys and its abundance of birds, with approximately 570 different species observed there. Some of them are migrating birds from Europe, Australia and Madagascar. Moreover, Ruaha is rich in game, and the rarely visited areas hidden in the bush are Tanzania's great secret. The park area is difficult to access, which means it has retained its natural, wild character. Ruaha Park is located on the river of the same name, and you can meet there, among others: rhinos, albino giraffes, albino zebras. There are about 10 elephants living there and they like to move in large herds. For those interested, it is possible to organize a balloon trip.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park

It is one of the smaller national parks in Tanzania, which was established only in 1992. The Udzungwa Mountains are a wonderful place for hiking and mountain expeditions. In the Udzungwa area there are many picturesque waterfalls that can be seen by trekking on one of the designated mountain trails. The highest peak is 2500 m above sea level. This vast mountain range was formed at least 100 million years ago. The biggest attractions include species of primates, 3 of which are endemic monkeys: Uhehe Iringa red Columbus, Matunda Galago and Sanje crested Mangabey. You can find here over 400 species of birds, as well as many species of amphibians, reptiles, beautiful butterflies and rare plants, including unusual flowers. It is an ornithological and entomological paradise in the rainforest. Only there you can find 10 species of chameleons, including a very rare type of chameleon with spiny wings. Udzungwa is the eighth place in Tanzania inscribed on the UNESCO list.

Gombe National Park with the Mahale Mountains

It is located in western Tanzania, a 3-hour plane ride from Dar Salaam, on the eastern side of Lake Tanganyika. The park is not as popular as, for example, Serengeti, but it is no less interesting. It is one of the last refuges in Africa where you can meet wild chimpanzees living in the wild. Their population is estimated at about 800 individuals. The main attraction of the park, apart from tracking groups of chimpanzees, are also observations of other species of monkeys, including red colubus and vervet monkeys. These are the smallest national parks in Tanzania, a Lake Tanganyika it's an attraction in itself. It is worth mentioning that after Baikal it is the second deepest lake in the world. The attractions of the area, apart from chimpanzees, include fishing, diving, bird watching, and the less touristy beaches with white sand encourage blissful relaxation.
