What is a superyacht?
A superyacht is a motor or sailing vessel over 24 meters (these are small superyachts) or over 30 meters in length. They even reach the longest over 180 meters. Luxury yachts also have service for at least 5 people on board. The larger the yacht, the larger the crew. In the world there are approx 5 thousand superyachts exceeding a length of 30 meters, approximately 20% of them are for sale. As you can guess, superyachts can be found all over the world, wherever there are people willing to pay for them. Renting a superyacht depends primarily on your personal preferences, the style of the yacht's interior, amenities or impact on the environment, but the planned budget also plays a significant role. Yachts for rent are often privately owned, and brokers only act as intermediaries between clients and the owner. In other cases, direct chartering is done by a company that has its own fleet, which undoubtedly means fewer formalities to complete.
What is the difference between a superyacht and a megayacht? First of all, the size of the yacht, price, performance and equipment play a key role. As we explained earlier, a superyacht starts with a conventional length of about 30 m. It has a crew of several people and can accommodate up to 12 people (due to the previously mentioned legal regulations). Megayachts, however, start from approximately 60 m long. They often also have special passenger licenses that will allow them to accommodate them over 12 guests. Megayachts usually offer more crew to accommodate guests higher level of services, often compared to that in the world's best hotels. On megayachts we can also expect a helipad, a spa, a gym, a cinema and even a submarine. In the case of the second option, however, you must take into account that you may be limited by the number of available yachts. Another quite important point is that in most cases superyachts have no problems with pick-ups children on board. However, it may happen that some of them require the appropriate age of the child. When planning a superyacht charter, it is also worth knowing about a very important thing: maximum number of passengers on board. The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) states that every ship that accepts on board over 12 passengers it automatically becomes passenger ship. It does not matter whether it is a private superyacht or not, under the law it is subject to special regulations and restrictions. Adapting to them often involves high costs, which would be covered by the client. We therefore recommend organizing a group of up to 12 people.
Superyacht rental – costs
The charter rate is divided into: base price + additional expenses + deposit, called for short APA (Advanced Provisioning Allowance) or all inclusive + additionally paid APA + additionally paid deposit. The all-inclusive offer includes all meals with non-alcoholic drinks, a bar with alcohol, fuel, and water sports. On yachts that offer a basic price, i.e. rental with crew, meals and drinks, fuel and mooring costs in marinas will be charged additionally. It should be paid in advance thanks to APA, which is approximately 20-30% of the basic superyacht rental rate. Your expenses will be added up on an ongoing basis - if you spend less during the cruise than you have paid towards APA, you will be left with overpayment refunded or you can leave this amount as tip for the crew.
There is a rule of thumb when it comes to tipping 5-20% of the value of your cruise, depending on satisfaction with the service. However, it is worth remembering that the amount is lower than the accepted 5% is not recommended. The tip should be delivered in the form of cash or a check to the captain before disembarking. He, in turn, will divide it among the crew. Sometimes, part of the appreciation for the service's work may be paid even before the charter. It may also happen that you want to end the cruise in a different place than you started. Then, if the distance from the originating port is significant, an additional fee may be charged to the originally agreed rate. The deposit, which is often required before the cruise, is refunded after the cruise, provided there is no damage to the yacht or its equipment due to the fault of the passengers.
